Spelling Activities for Kids
The more students use their words in writing activities, the greater the chances they will learn them by using the correct form, referencing it or making a mistake which they must later correct.
If you are a parent or teacher, you might know the pain of teaching kids how to spell. However, there are specific exceptions to these guidelines, as well as many of the extremely difficult-to-spell words.
A few child-friendly spelling exercises are provided below:
The ability to spell comes naturally to some kids and not so easily to others. Readers need to have an understanding of both sight words and phonics words to become good readers.

Kids might not be always up for learning yet they are ready for playing anytime. Let’s make them learn new words and their spellings through our spelling practice activities given below!
- Words on Stairs
With this fun spelling exercise, you can help your children easily learn the word spellings through memorizing.
All you need to do is copy and paste the letters on the stairs in the right order from bottom to top.
Children also have to climb those stairs while saying the letter loudly.
As an example,
The word is “Earth,” and the letter “e” should be pasted on the bottom step. Copy and paste “a” on the step above, followed by “r,” “t,” and “h” on the next set of stairs.
Kids will recite the letter “e” while putting one leg on it. When they get to that stair, they will climb up and continue reciting the letters. When they got to the letter “h,” they would say the complete word out, like “e-a-r-t-h – Earth.”
Kids can climb down the steps and then start climbing again while reciting the letters if you want them to practice a word more than once.
After that, the word on the steps can be changed.
2. Crossword Puzzle
Kids aren’t going to be able to solve the puzzle here.
Rather, they’re going to make it!
You can ask your child to write down a few words on paper while they think about it. They now have to make a table that has columns and rows. Following that, learners must write those words in the boxes so that they match vertically, horizontally, or diagonally within the same line. They then have to manually insert letters into the remaining boxes.
Either you or another participant must figure out the kid’s crossword puzzles.
As an alternative, you can find many types of kindergarten spelling exercises that are printable and based on crossword puzzles. Your kids will love working through them.
3. Jumble-Up
The goal of this spelling bee for kids is to make as many words as they can by choosing at random three to six letters.
For example, kids can make words like at, tap, pat, and apt if they choose the letters “a,” “p,” and “t.”
4. Compete and Conquer
You may divide the kids into two teams for this game. This game can also be played with two players.
You are going to give every team a letter, let’s say D. They have to use that particular letter to form as many words as they can (do, did, dare, dust, dirt, dance, etc.).
5. Watch and Identify
All you need for this simple spelling word game is a kids magazine or book.
Kids must recognize the pictures of the objects in the book or magazine and write down their spellings.
