Spelling and Word Study
Spelling and Word Study: As students learn letter-sound pairings and begin to read, they start writing words and sentences. Seeing how words are spelled helps student with reading and writing.
In the early grades, reading and spelling are taught together. Formal spelling classes can help students improve their reading skills.
Here are some activities to try:
- Kids can learn to spell some words by hearing out each letter. Short, simple words are preferable for beginners. Encourage your kid to write stories and spell words using the sounds that each letter makes.
- Create a puzzle word by writing a word on paper and then cutting the letters apart. Magnetic and felt letters are also suitable for this project. Mix the letters and have your kids spell the word by arranging them in sequence.
- Say a word and ask your children to repeat it. Then, have them write the letters that correspond to the sounds in the word.
- Point out how certain terms are similar. Discuss how hop is related to top, cop, and mop. Ask your children to say words that sound similar to fun, man, pay, and pin.
- Ask your kids to draw a picture of a family activity. Ask them to write a statement describing it underneath the photo. Encourage your children to speak the sentence and write letters that correspond to the sounds in each word. Then ask them to read what they wrote.
- As your children grow, help them learn the proper spelling of the words they write.
As your children progress in spelling and word study, help them learn the correct spelling of the words they write by helping them understand more about letter patterns. However, overcorrecting can be discouraging. Offer occasional, gentle guidance, and let them put all their thoughts on paper before correcting.
