3 Exciting Spelling Games & Activities to Include in Your Lesson Plans
Exciting Spelling Games: Are you trying to find spelling exercises and spelling game concepts that won’t bore your students? Hey, we understand! Although spelling is an essential ability that aids in communication and the development of writing abilities in our pupils, it is not an easy talent for young learners to acquire due to the structure of the English language.
English spelling is full with irregularities that make it difficult for young learners to learn because it contains thousands of words that have been borrowed from a wide range of other languages. Even though spell-checking software, autocorrect, and readily accessible dictionaries are commonplace in today’s classrooms, spelling instruction is still important now more than ever.
So how can you encourage your kids to understand the complicated yet basic guidelines that will ensure they consistently spell every word correctly? Have fun with it, of course!
This list of our favorite spelling bee activities and suggestions was put together by the Canvas Child team’s teachers to make letter stringing a little bit more interesting this school year. Spelling Activities for Kids
Go “Around the World”
A spelling game for the entire class called Around the World is simple to modify for various skill levels.
Here’s how it works:
- As the first travelers, select a pupil and have them take a seat behind the person seated to their right.
- When you read a word to a student, they have to spell it out loud.
- If they correctly guess the term, they proceed to “move around the world” by standing behind the next person seated to their right.
- Give the word to the student sitting in front of them if they have spelled it wrong. The pupil who successfully spells the word moves on to become the next traveler.
For a student to complete the game, they must make it all the way around the circle, or around the globe. This is yet another concept that is highly effective in smaller settings.
Construct Spelling Word Shapes
Let pupils practice writing their spelling words in their preferred shape as a further practical exercise to help them develop visual memories! You’ll need tracing paper, simple coloring books in black and white, and concrete poem templates for this idea. Students trace their spelling words all the way along the black lines on the tracing sheet by placing it over their form!

Play Sight Word Bingo
Since we are aware that children enjoy playing bingo, Canvas Child offers a ton of sight word bingo cards that are ready to print. Students can play in small groups by printing one of the prepared options or adding their own list of spelling words to this blank, customizable template.
Too easy? This enjoyable pastime is trickery! Although it’s a fast-paced activity, it also helps your children with spelling recognition as they have to match words to the appropriate spots on their bingo cards. This repetition of reading and recognizing words might help students’ spelling skills and aid in their memory of the correct spellings.
