Important tips for practicing spelling words
1. Give students enough of experience with utilized spelling before contests. Ask students to spell things out frequently, even from their seats, to get some “performance” practice.
2. Instruct students to come to the front of the classroom and WRITE words correctly on the board. While not the same as spoken spelling, it does allow you practice spelling in front of others. It helps students get used to public spelling.
3. Remember to utilize spelling bee words in sentences when quizzing students. For example, pause should be clarified to avoid confusion with paws: The referees chose to suspend the game while they examined the previous play. For more similar examples, check out this collection of 50 homophones.
